DEPARTMENT OF NANOTECHNOLOGY

Nanotechnology has become one of the key and exciting forefront fields and integrated with every field of Science and Engineering. Though for many years it has remained shrouded; it has started attracting large research crowds for its designs to produce novel materials.

With benefits still exhuming, this cutting edge technology is fast becoming a necessity in modern life impacting the areas of environment, medicine, industry, agriculture, construction, power and so forth, where it has totally revolutionized the very face of the sectors. Moreover, technological advancements in nanotechnology have been extensively groundbreaking, urging the industry to look much ahead by facilitating interaction with experts and updating existing skills to innovate novel nanomaterials.

Department of Nanotechnology incepted in the year 2009, offering post graduate programme in M.Tech. Nanotechnology and Ph.D. program under the school of Interdisciplinary Sciences with advanced teaching learning process mainly emphasizing on the concepts that can be applied to all fields of engineering and medicine. Students from different engineering disciplines and Masters of Sciences are eligible to pursue the M. Tech. degree in nanotechnology admitted through a common entrance test. A well-equipped Nanomaterials laboratory with the state-of-the-art facilities to synthesize and characterize Nanomaterials gives the students hands on experience in performing the various safe and systematic protocols. The unique feature of the department of nanotechnology is that it is functioning with young and dynamic faculty members.

Joseph Joly, Ph.D. – NCL; Post doc – IIT-K & JAPAN), Dr. S. Balamurugan, Ph.D. – IIT-B; Post doc – GERMANY & JAPAN) & Dr. P. K. Praseeta, Ph.D. –KU) and 3 Lecturers (Ms. V. Jayashankari, Mr. S. Department of Nanotechnology contains the following laboratories,

A well equipped Nanomaterials laboratory with the state-of-the-art facilities to synthesize novel materials and advanced characterization facility for Nanomaterials has been planned; presently the department is well equipped with facilities necessary for nanotechnology research, which is spread into six labs. Nanomaterials synthesis laboratory is dedicated for both bottom-up and top-down approaches and surface modifications of nanomaterials. The advanced nanomaterials characterization laboratory is established with various characterization and computational facilities for nanomaterial research. The nanotechnology applications laboratory is set up for the research on the application of nanomaterials in various fields such as biomedical, energy, functional materials, etc.

Faculty of department of Nanotechnology attended the following faculty development programmes,

 

       I.            Mr. S. Gobalakrishanan attended Short Term Training Programme-Quality Improvement Program, (STTP-QIP) Course on “Energy, Environmental and BioMedical Applications of Nanomaterials” Organized by Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) held during 20th – 25th September 2010.

     II.            Three of our faculty members (Dr. V. L. Joseph Joly, Mr. R.S. Rimal Isaac and Dr. P. K. Praseeta) attended three day Faculty Development Programme (FDP), Organized by HRM, Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education (Noorul Islam University), Kumaracoil 629 180, held during 23rd – 25th September 2010.

 

INTERVIEWS

       I.            Prof. Dr. techn. Murthy CHAVALI, Head, Department of nanotechnology had been chosen for an interview by ELSEVIER & SCOPUS (The Netherlands) as a part of team of enthusiasts who are exploring the value of scientific videos for scientists, scheduled on Wed, 17th Nov. 2010.

       i.               Prof. Dr. techn. Murthy CHAVALI with his experience in International Relations, initiated collaborations with several international and national research institutes/ industries/ companies.

     ii.               International Collaborations, presently in discussions with Malaysian, Taiwan and Canadian Universities towards joint research, faculty exchange programmes and student exchange programmes.
